Frequently Asked Questions

1. What's the difference between a fairy cake and a cupcake?

Visually a cupcake is larger than a fairy cake, but the big difference is in the taste! Buttercup cupcakes are made to American recipes; they are moist and usually topped with generous helpings of buttercream or cream cheese "frosting", not hard sugar icing. And please don't even say that "marzip--" word!

2. How long do your cupcakes last?

Because our cupcakes are made with fresh ingredients and no added preservatives, they are best enjoyed on the day. They will still taste deliciously fresh for 2 more days if you wrap the box in cling film or put in an airtight container and store at ambient temperature. (The fridge is usually a "no no" as it tends to make them stale.) The cookies 'n' cream cupcake is an exception; as it contains fresh cream it must be refrigerated or consumed within 3 hours of purchase.

3. Does Buttercup deliver?

Yes, we deliver to Central London, Kent and Essex. Please see our delivery page for full prices and details.

4. Can I order ahead?

Yes. Please see our order page for more details.

5. Can I place an order for cupcakes on the same day I need them?

Just call and ask. We aim to accommodate your cravings, however we are sometimes unable to fulfill last minute requests, particularly on Fridays and Saturdays.

6. Can I order for my wedding?

Yes. We happily provide cupcakes for your happiest day! Please see our events page. We suggest you stop by on a day your preferred flavour is being made in order to taste it. Then we can arrange for delivery for the day (Mon-Fri). Customers wanting delivery outside London or on Saturdays or for a stated time are welcome to send their own courier. See delivery page. We don't do set ups but will be pleased to liaise with your caterer or event coordinator. We also make "top tier" cakes and hire tiered cupcake stands holding up to 200 of our regular sized cupcakes. Please ask for details.

7. Do you also make big cakes?

Yes, buttercup now also offers celebration cakes to order in a range of sizes and decorations. Please call us for sizes and prices.

8. Do I have to stand in the queue if I've ordered ahead?

No. You can skip directly to the till and give your name to our counter staff. (Just ignore any jealous glares).

9. Who gets to lick the spoon?

While we don't let anyone lick the spoon, you get the next best thing when you order an extra shot of frosting. Perfect for immediate gratification!

10. Do you have seating?

Yes, for those who just can't wait, we have limited seating for 5-10 people on a first-come, first-seated basis.

11. Are you hiring?

We're currently a small team, but we're growing. If you have a passion for cupcakes and are enthusiastic about good customer service, send your c.v. to yum@buttercupcakeshop.co.uk along with your desired location(s). Please note that due to equipment used, candidates must be at least 18 to work at buttercup, and we are not able to offer work experience places at this time.

12. Do you make wheat/dairy/egg-free cupcakes?

All our recipes contain wheat, dairy and eggs. Unfortunately we cannot accomodate "free-from" requests.

13. How can my organisation receive a donation?

Buttercup's Sweet Charity program allows organisations to raise money for various causes while also enjoying all of your favourite treats. The process is simple. Email us at yum@buttercupcakeshop.co.uk and request your event date (Mon-Fri) at least 1 week in advance. Once agreed, download and distribute the voucher to as many people as you possibly can ahead of the agreed date, and your local Buttercup Cake Shop will contribute 15% of your event sales to your registered charity. Fundraising has never been easier or sweeter!
Buttercup donations are made exclusively within this program, so if it's cupcakes or vouchers you're after, we can convert an even higher percentage of your organisation's sales to a cupcake donation. Sorry, no ad hoc requests (ie outside this progarm) will be considered.
